The Original Conrad Herd and
Bull "Kalispell Chief"

Long known for its spirit of neighborliness,
friendship and pioneering, along with its
spectacular open spaces, the Flathead Valley was
the ideal site for Conrad's roaming buffalo. When
the majestic animal became endangered in the late
1890's, Charles Conrad and his wife, Alicia, started
a herd that would become the most respected in the
country. Here in the Montana wilderness, the
purebred buffalo roamed. The animals thrived, and
in 1908, the Conrad herd provided the orginal 37
head of bison to start the National Bison Range.
